The club will operate at a payroll that figures to go no higher than $55 million. Samueli said that he made it clear to general manager Bob Murray that they won’t spend to the cap ceiling of $59.4 million this season and added the Ducks are in the middle of the pack in terms of league revenue.

There was no plan to sharply scale back on payroll as the objective “is to kind of be in the mid-range of expenditures but still field a competitive playoff-caliber, Stanley Cup-caliber team every year.”

“We told Bob, he’s got to put competitive teams on the ice so we’re not going to tie his hands behind his back by saying you have no budget,” Samueli said. ”He has to have a reasonable budget in order to field a competitive team. He also has to spend wisely.”

The team's payroll is around 51,600,000. that leaves around 3.4 mil to get another defender.
